Brandon Smith is a Instructional Design Manager. He earned the Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD®) credential in 2015.

Why did you pursue the APTD®/CPTD?
I decided to pursue the CPTD certification early in my career to distinguish myself and show my commitment to professional growth. Earning the credential provided an opportunity to highlight my expertise and dedication to continuous learning. It also allowed me to demonstrate to leadership that I was serious about advancing in the field and making meaningful contributions. Over the past decade, the CPTD has been an invaluable asset in my development journey.

How have you benefited from the credential—professionally and/or personally?
Obtaining this credential has shaped my career and personal growth in numerous ways. Shortly after achieving it, I was promoted first to senior instructional designer and then advanced to instructional design manager. These new roles allowed me to further hone my skills—not only as an instructional designer but also as an effective manager who guides and mentors others.

Over the years, I have leveraged the expertise gained through the credential in every aspect of my work, from designing impactful learning experiences to leading teams with confidence. It opened doors to broader involvement within my professional community, particularly within my local KC ATD chapter, where I have been able to participate in a variety of areas and contribute in meaningful ways.

The credential also enabled me to support ATD at a national level, assisting with exam writing, review processes, and other diverse opportunities that have enriched my understanding of training and development. Through these experiences, I have built valuable connections, expanded my professional network, and continued to demonstrate my knowledge and commitment as a training and development professional.

Overall, the credential has not only facilitated my career advancement and deepened my skill set but has also connected me with a vibrant community of practice and provided a platform to give back to the field in impactful ways.
